(Kodak14432; W. Griem 2007):
The great plain of Varas (which in part has different names: Llano Humito for example) divides the hills of Carrera Pinto with the "real" Pre-Cordillera with peaks up to 4700 meters high in this sector (Co. Vicuña). The plain really has an unreal touch - for lack of points known as trees or houses the human eye has no chance of estimating distances. The heat is unbearable - the altitude of about 1800 meters does not help much in cooling the rocks in the burning sun of the day. A walk a couple of meters in broad daylight shows us quite quickly what the word DESERT means.
Location: Llano de Varas - Humitos between Carrera Pinto and Inca de Oro.
Next town: Inca de Oro (20 km; Small shops, simple restaurant), Copiapó (80 km)
Petrol: Copiapó (80 km), Diego de Almagro (70 km)
Road condition: Asphalted, all vehicles
Worth seeing: landscape, desert, historic mines.
