Nevado Ojos del Salado in the Atacama Region, Chile
Photo: The Ojos del Salado, the highest active volcano in the world and the highest mountain in Chile. The "Ojos del Salado" has a height of 6893 meters above sea level; the photo was taken from a distance of about 20 kilometers. (Currently, on the new road there is a signposted viewpoint where you can see more or less the same panorama)

Nevado Ojos del Salado:
However, the journey is not easy but possible. The international road is in good condition, but it is also recommended a suitable vehicle for the terrain (Un SUV or 4X4). It's 250 kilometers, over 4500 meters high. But be prepared: enough water, food, spare wheel, warm clothes and petrol.
More information about the route here

Description:
Location: In the Andes high cordillera, about 270 kilometers east of Copiapó.
Nearest town: Copiapó (270 km); El Salvador (264 km) - Always drive over the police station "Maricunga"! also back! to log in or log out
Petrol: Copiapó (270 km), El Salvador (264 km).
Attention: If the tank is small, take along reserve - the vehicles consume more in height.
Between Copiapó and Ojos del Salado there are no restaurants and there is no possibility to stay overnight between Copiapó and Ojos del Salado. Nearby: CONAF cabins Santa Rosa and Negro Francisco.
Road condition: Salted, partly asphalted, but watch out there are "surprises".
Worth seeing: lookout points, high cordillera, volcanoes over 6500 metres above sea level, snowfields, unique landscapes, salt lakes, animals and plants. Beware: road runs partly at 4500 meters altitude - altitude sickness! At night it can easily be -20°C, look for deeper regions to camp with tents (at the Laguna Verde there is a camp. Pay attention to the condition of the car: Better SUV, 4X4, Jeep or pickup due to the extreme outside conditions.
UTM: E540.191 / N70.22.970 - Height: 4468 m (viewpoint on the road).
