The Pan de Azúcar National Park is located in
the north of the Atacama region, about 20 km north of the city of
Chañaral. The main access road to the park also branches off from the
Pan-Americanan Highway in Chañaral. But there are two other access
roads: one in "Las Bombas", km 1031 from the Pan-Americanan highway, the
other at km 1017.
The central administration is located at the entrance to the National
Park coming from Chañaral, with many information points for visitors.
The flora, fauna, history and geology in particular are discussed in a
small exhibition. There are small leaflets with maps and further
information. The park is very clean throughout, especially the areas
where camping is allowed. The camping costs 10,000 pesos per night (with
arbour and barbecue area) or 5,000 pesos "natural". Showers and toilets
are in good condition (prices 2005).
The park's infrastructure - especially the roads are in very good
condition - is mostly paved with salt. This allows visits to sectors
that are not normally accessible to the general public. The nature in
this sector is of an impressive beauty.
