The city of Chañaral is located in the north of the Atacama Region directly on the coast, 170 kilometers north of Copiapó, the capital of the Atacama Region. Today Chañaral has about 13,000 inhabitants. The impact of an almost 200 year old industrial tradition is still visible. Firstly, the Animas mining, then the development of the Potrerillos mine and now El Salvador mark the development phases of Chañaral.
In Chañaral there are a large number of restaurants offering fresh fish and seafood - most of them are located on the north side of the Pan-American Highway.
