According to the texts, an earthquake of greater magnitude: "not a single house was left standing"
The maximum magnitude also arrived very quickly: "had not the inhabitants had time to quit their houses".
It can be estimated that a tsunami of considerable height occurred: "Many slabs of copper, which had been covered with sand by advances of the sea, were afterward dug out again".
Earthquake dates reported:
1773
1796
1819

Earthquake 11 de april 1819
Original text:
1819.
Molina says that the provinces of Atacama and Coquimbo have
never suffered from earthquakes. This is incorrect. The city of
Copiapó was visited by them about once in every twenty-three
years, viz: in 1773, 1796, and 1819 (1818*). On this last
occasion not a single house was left standing. After some minor
shocks, that destroyed the church of La Merced, the principal
one, which overthrew the town, took place on the 11th April,
1819, between 8 and 9 in the morning. It was preceded by a noise
like distant thunder; and its effects must have been more
destructive, had not the inhabitants had time to quit their
houses. Many slabs of copper, which had been covered with sand
by advances of the sea, were afterward dug out again.
