Hermann Burmeister, scientist, paleontologist and explorer in Germany and South America.

Hermann Burmeister (also Herman Burmeister) was born 1807 in Stralsund (Germany), studied medicine and natural sciences, worked briefly as a doctor. and then he started his work as a paleontologist and scientist. His main interest was biology, paleontology and geology. 1837 he took up a position at the University of Halle (Germany), the first time in 1850 he travelled to South America, collecting a large number of biological samples. In 1861 he emigrated to Buenos Aires (Argentina) to take over the direction of the Natural Science Museum. He formed the Faculties of Natural Sciences at the National University of Córdoba. At 1892 he had an accident in his museum where he seriously injured himself and died three months later as a result of the wounds.
Burmeister only arrived at Atacama during his Catamarca expedition to Caldera between 15.3.1859 and 1.4.1859.
