Travelers who visited the Atacama Desert in the
last century took the phenomenon of the desert flowering into account.
Paul Treutler observes in 1851 between Caldera and Copiapó:
".... Punta de Piedra. Above the burned sand you can see some plants
that flowered during the winter but the sun's burning rays dried it up".
