Between Vallenar and Huasco is located Freirina. A small town in the middle of olive plantations and Huasco River. Freirina is a pretty little town with history. It currently has about 3,469 inhabitants.

The history:
In 1755 "Santa Rosa de Guasco" was founded, but in 1824 it was renamed to Freirina. In the year 1833 Freirina has about 5,594 inhabitants. Two years later (1835) the English scientist Charles Darwin visited Freirina. In 1870 the Los Portales Building was built, which today houses the municipality. In industrial history, the discovery of the Capote gold mine and its exploitation until the 1950s is noteworthy. Another milestone is the construction of the railway line in 1892. From this date on, Freirina is connected to Huasco and Vallenar by a modern means of transport.
